Question 1

What is an IP address?

Accepted Answer

It's the address your internet connection uses to send and receive data. Every website you visit sees it, and can use it to estimate your country, city and internet provider.

Question 2

Why does the location look wrong?

Accepted Answer

IP location comes from databases that map address ranges to places. It's usually right on the country, often close on the city, and can point to your provider's hub instead of where you are. VPNs and proxies show their own location.

Question 3

How do I change my IP address?

Accepted Answer

Restarting your router sometimes gets a new one from your provider. To appear from a specific country or city, route your traffic through a proxy or VPN: websites then see the proxy's IP instead of yours.

Question 4

Why do I see both an IPv4 and an IPv6 address?

Accepted Answer

Many connections have both. Sites that support IPv6 may see that address, older ones see the IPv4 address. A proxy should cover both, or your real IPv6 address can still leak.
